Solar Study Lamp project specification and summary

April 23, 2011 revision

Summary: Design and develop a solar powered desktop study lamp. This lamp will be assembled into subsystems, and final assembled as a student project kit. A student lesson plan developed and the end-product used by rural students in off-the-electrical-grid locations.

Objectives:
  • Research small solar energy systems, components, and similar solar lighting
  • Create a suitable electrical system schematic for a solar panel and battery powered study lamp.
  • Create or adapt from an existing design, a suitable mechanical enclosure.
  •  Investigate and identify commercial sources of components (ie. Photovoltaic panels, batteries, charge controllers, lighting, etc.).  Prefer to partner with manufacturer and parts sources in China. Set up supply chain in China to ship to Evergreen Schools in China
  •  Development and prototype within budget .
  • Production Kit budget $20 USD
  • Design reference lesson plans involving solar power systems.
  • Lamp to operate during nighttime hours for a minimum of 6 hours. Charging time in daylight of approximately 8 hours.
Schedule:

Manufacturing Partner
The winning proposal and our desired partner will be one who has charitable intention – for example, use of suppliers that will give cost break, doing work for overhead cost, and minimal profit. At the completion of the first production trial, Evergreen Education Foundation will present a letter that can be used to show Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) action by your company. Additional promotional opportunities could also be negotiated at a future date.
